A portion of I-40 at the Tenessee and North Carolina state line was destroyed by a mudslide on Friday as the Pigeon River raged and flooded.

Catastrophic flooding from the Pigeon River has severely damaged a portion of Interstate 40, closing a critical section near the Tennessee-North Carolina border. The flooding, triggered by heavy rains, caused a mudslide that washed away parts of the eastbound lanes at mile marker 3 in North Carolina. Authorities have closed the highway indefinitely while they assess the damage and wait for the waters to recede. Travel disruption is expected to persist, impacting local communities and transport routes until repairs are completed.

It is highly recommended to avoid this area if at all possible, as detours may be extensive, and the closure is indefinite. Be sure to plan alternate routes in advance to minimize delays. If you are in these areas and encounter any delays, make sure you stay in touch with your carrier! Stay safe on the road!
